Last week, I had dinner with a friend who had recently lost her mother. During our conversation, she shared a touching story about finding love letters her grandfather had written to her grandmother during wartime.
As she described sitting in the attic, reading the aged letters dating back to 1939, her emotions overflowed as she handed me one of the letters.
Feeling a bit intrusive, I cautiously opened the envelope, pulled out the aged stationery, and began to read. Despite my initial hesitation, I was quickly captivated by his heartfelt words expressing his profound love and devotion for her.
As I read, it was as if the restaurant’s noise faded away, and I became fully immersed in the moving message from her grandfather to her grandmother.
The letter overflowed with love, tenderness, and passion, leaving a lasting impact on me. Towards the end, there was a sense of finality, as if he knew he might never see her again.
Folding the letter carefully, I placed it in its envelope and returned it to my friend. She shared that it was the last letter her grandmother
received. Tragically, her grandfather never returned from the war; it claimed his life.
I thanked her for sharing her story with me. As I drove home, I couldn’t shake that letter from my mind. His loving words touched me deeply, and I reflected on how different the world might be if we loved ourselves as much as her grandparents loved each other. Despite the heartache, loneliness, and grief they endured because of the war, their love seemed to transcend it all.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to forget to show ourselves the love and appreciation we deserve. We often prioritize caring for others or meeting external expectations, leaving little time or energy for self-love and self-care.
Taking the time to express love and gratitude towards ourselves can profoundly affect our well-being and overall happiness.
One powerful way to do this is by writing ourselves a love letter.
Here are some steps to consider:
The Power of Words: Words have a remarkable ability to shape our thoughts, feelings, and actions. When we write a love letter to ourselves, we connect the power of language to create self-compassion,
self-acceptance, and self-esteem. Each word becomes a declaration of love, reminding us of our worthiness and inner beauty.
Setting the Scene: Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can fully immerse yourself in the writing process. Light a candle, play soft music, or surround yourself with objects that bring you joy and comfort. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and quiet your mind.
Reflect and Appreciate: Begin by reflecting on the qualities, strengths, and accomplishments that make you unique. Consider the challenges you’ve overcome and the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Allow yourself to feel gratitude for the person you are today, even love your flaws.
Pour Your Heart Out: As you begin to write, let your words flow freely from the heart. Be honest, vulnerable, and kind to yourself. Express your love, admiration, and appreciation for all that you are. Acknowledge your efforts, celebrate your victories, and offer words of encouragement for the journey ahead.
Include Specifics: Be specific in your love letter. Highlight moments of personal growth, acts of kindness towards others, or qualities you admire about yourself. Recall fond memories, achievements, and experiences that have shaped your identity and character.
Embrace Imperfection: Remember that perfection is not the goal of this exercise. Embrace the imperfections and quirks that make you human. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and authentic in your writing, knowing that your worthiness is not contingent on external validation or approval.
Seal it with Love: Once you’ve poured your heart out onto the page, take a moment to read over your love letter and soak in the words of affirmation and love. Seal it with a kiss, a loving message, or a heartfelt signature. Consider keeping the letter next to your gratitude jar where you can revisit it whenever you need a reminder of your worthiness and inner beauty.
In a society that often emphasizes external validation and achievement, writing yourself a love letter is an act of self-care and self-compassion. It’s a powerful reminder that you are worthy of love, kindness, and acceptance, just as you are.
So take a moment to compose a love letter for yourself, embrace your authentic self, and let your words serve as a guiding light and love on your journey of self-discovery and self-love.
